Degree: Associate of Arts and Sciences with a major in Science

Length: Four-semester (two-year) program

Purpose: With the emphasis on scientific discoveries and technological developments in today’s society, there is a demand for scientists and scientifically-oriented persons in business, government, industry and the professions. The Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree Program in Science is designed for persons who are interested in the pre-professional or scientific program and who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree program with a major in one of the following fields:

Agriculture
Biology
Chemistry
Pre-Dentistry
Education
Forestry
Geology
Mathematics
Pre-Medical
Nursing
Pharmacy
Physical Therapy
Physics

Program Requirements: The Science program requires competency in English and Math Essentials MTE 1-9 as demonstrated through the placement and diagnostic tests, or by satisfactorily completing the required MTE units or equivalent.

Students are urged to become acquainted with the requirements of the major department in the college or university to which transfer is contemplated and also to consult with the Student Services Office of the community college in planning their program and selecting electives. Note the guaranteed admission and articulation agreements referenced on Admissions  apply only to students who complete the Associate Degree.

The following list is a suggested sequence in which students may plan their class schedules to ensure graduation in two years.

  • Elective Health or Physical Education 2 credits
  • Elective Science w/out Lab 3 credits 7
  • Elective Social Science (PSY 200  or higher level) 3 credits 1
  • Elective Lab Science 4 credits 3

1Courses may be chosen from the Science General Electives .

2Three credits of transfer History electives are required and can be chosen from HIS 101 , HIS 102 , HIS 111 , HIS 112 , HIS 121 , HIS 122 .

3Courses may be chosen from the Science General Electives .

4Courses may be chosen from the Literature General Electives .

5Courses may be chosen from BIO 285 , CSC 200  or higher level, EGR 120 or higher level, MTH 163 or higher level, or NAS 150 .

6Courses may be chosen from the Humanities Electives .

7Students may chose BIO 285  or NAS 150 .

8In consultation with your academic advisor, the Mathematics requirement may be selected from the following sequences:

MTH 161 Precalculus I  + MTH 240 Statistics  or
MTH 161 Precalculus I  + MTH 261 Applied Calculus I  or
MTH 261  + MTH 262  Applied Calculus I & II or
MTH 263  + MTH 264  Calculus I & II

*Requirements of four-year institutions may vary. Students should consult a counselor or their academic advisor to select electives that will satisfy baccalaureate major requirements. In addition, they should confirm with the college or university to which they plan to transfer that they will receive credit at the four-year institution.
