General Studies, Communication/Media Studies Specialization, AA&S

Degree: Associate of Arts and Sciences in General Studies with a Specialization in Communication/ Media Studies

Length: Four-semester (two-year) program

Purpose: The Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree program in General Studies with the Communication/ Media Studies specialization is designed specifically for those students who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university and have an interest in either a major or minor in a communication or media studies area.

Program Requirements: In addition to the admission requirements established for the college, completion of General Studies program requires competency in English and Math Essentials MTE 1-5 as demonstrated through the placement and diagnostic tests, or by satisfactorily completing the required MTE units or equivalent. Students are urged to become acquainted with the requirements of the major department in the college or university to which transfer is contemplated and also to consult with the Student Services Office of the community college in planning their program and selecting electives. Note the guaranteed admission and articulation agreements referenced on Admissions  apply only to students who complete the Associate Degree.

The following list is a suggested sequence in which students may plan their class schedules to ensure graduation in two years.

1Courses may be chosen from the Social Science Electives  in WCC catalog. Check with WCC advisor or transfer institution advisor. SOC 200  and PSY 200  are recommended for two.

2Communications/Media Studies students will be required to complete a minimum of one Journalistic assignment

3Six credits of transfer Literature electives are required and can be chosen from ENG 241 , ENG 242 , ENG 243 , ENG 244 .

4HLT 143 does not meet HLT/PED degree requirement.

5Suggested courses: BIO 101 , BIO 102  or CHM 111 , CHM 112 . Courses may be selected from Science General Electives  in WCC catalog. Check with WCC advisor or transfer institution advisor.

6Courses may be chosen from HIS 101 , HIS 102 , HIS 121 , HIS 122  

7Courses may be chosen from any of the MTH transfer courses .

*Requirements of four-year institutions may vary. Students should consult a counselor or their academic advisor to select electives that will satisfy baccalaureate major requirements. In addition, they should confirm with the college or university to which they plan to transfer that they will receive credit at the four-year institution.
